The Long Road from Paris

I'm not a fan of car racing or rallies and from the cover I thought that was all that was in store for me. It was only after sitting down one rainy afternoon, opening the first page and not putting it down until I reached the final page, that I was so glad I did so. The Long Road to Paris is at its heart a touching story of long lost love flavored with mystery and the suspense of a true thriller al To be honest, I wasn't particularly keen on reading this novel when it first came to my attention.

The Long Road to Paris is at its heart a touching story of long lost love flavored with mystery and the suspense of a true thriller all wrapped up in the unique backdrop of an around the world rally race. Written as an interlocking series of narrative prose and diary entries, the plot thickens as Ed and Marie-Claire, two apparent strangers, set off on a race crossing the Siberian plains and into communist China.

Although fiction, the authors, Ed and Janet Howle, write from a place of personal experience for they were participants in a similar global race in with a Volkswagen Beetle. The plot coils and turns unexpectedly through a subtext laced with covert affairs, spies, mystery and suspense. Spiced with an uncanny knowledge of the secret world of clandestine agencies, this novel is well-paced and entertaining with a slight environmental undercurrent. Jul 19, Christie rated it liked it.

The story is quite unbelievable as a lovely French navigator, Marie Claire, is hired to accompany him and, of course, they fall in love. Meanwhile, at home, Ed's wife has essentially abandoned parenthood of their 7-year-old to follow her Indian sami guru in search of some eternal Sound crazy? This was a crazy book! Albeit a fun read.

And what made it most frustrating for me was not knowing how much of it was based on fact and how much fiction. I found that frustrating. Jan 12, Lizzie Harwood rated it it was amazing. The locations and details were all so real and it's rare that anyone in that car rally world has the skills to write a whole novel taking readers into that scene. The authors then added intrigue, mystery, romance and some thrills on top of a eco-technology plot, which was also believable and engaging. It all adds up to a lot of fun and a good story. Apr 10, Sandy Bell rated it it was ok. I really wanted to like this book.
