The earliest creeds are arguably to be found in Scripture itself. While there are no official, full-blown creeds in the New Testament, scholar Ralph Martin has suggested that the beginnings of creeds are already present in the New Testament and were developed by early Christians to defend against subtle pagan influences and to establish key beliefs. Protestantism today faces a crisis in authority.
Living in the twenty-first century means we are born into a world that has experienced the full effects of the Enlightenment, Protestant Liberalism, and Postmodernism.

As he stood there trembling at the Diet of Worms, certainly it must have seemed to Martin Luther that the whole world was against him. While our circumstances may differ today, the need to recover biblical authority in the church and in the culture remains. The next generation of Christians need to be taught, perhaps for the first time, that this is no ordinary book we hold in our hands. We take Saint Thomas Aquinas, as a medieval priest, philosopher, professor and theologian, as the greatest model and example of this.

We try to use the principles of Aquinas' thought to proclaim the faith in a contemporary context. It is very promising. Credo is meant to be an aide and a resource to those who are teaching RCIA. Dominic: "What we wanted to create is something that is calibrated to RCIA, is able to handle some of the more difficult topics that an RCIA program needs to cover, and can do it in a way that will also be flexible so that it can be adapted to individual parishes. There will be an ability for parishes to pick and choose what components work best within their parish settings. How is Mary a source of inspiration and comfort for those coming into the Catholic faith?
Raymund: "For so many converts, the Blessed Virgin Mary played a prominent role in their process of conversion. There are a few lessons devoted to Mary in the Credo program.
We also are developing a prayer book featuring various Marian prayers as a supplement in the program. Dominic: "A lot of people thinking about becoming Catholic might find the Catholic devotion to the Virgin Mary to be a difficult subject, or even an obstacle. We wanted to address that in a meaningful way, so there is a significant amount of material on Mary. Mary is our Mother, so she has a motherly love for us. She wants to guide us to her Son. Many of those who are becoming Catholic have developed a love for Mary, and they sense her nurturing love.
Raymund: "We have witnessed that, because society is becoming more fragmented, people see, for instance, the Church's moral teachings, and the authority of the Church, as a much needed guide. The fact that the Church weighs in on so many issues, and that she carries Divine Revelation, is actually a consolation.
A lot of people out there are looking for the truth, and when they are exposed to an articulate explanation of the faith, they are inspired. In working with different Thomistic Institute chapters on secular college campuses, we have actually found a great hunger for the truth and been able to witness this sort of positive response in the lives of so many young people. Our creeds are still developing. The reason for this is because there is no need to think of the Holy Spirit as solely masculine. Feminist theologians have been active in suggesting that the word for Spirit can equally be regarded as feminine.
Perhaps this may be an example of the Spirit leading us into truth and enabling to grow in understanding. The Apostles were concerned that the important truths which they believed were clearly stated and maintained and there is evidence in the New Testament that there were creedal statements current during the life-time of the Apostles.
There were brief statements of faith in Christ as the Son of God and in the incarnation Rom. The apostle Paul emphasises the importance of "holding the pattern of sound words," and teaches that the Church is the "pillar and ground of the truth. I have suggested a passage from 1 Timothy for bible study, afterwards, if you have time, there are also some other creedal statements which you can look at in the New Testament. Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.
For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance and for this we labour and strive , that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, and especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things.
Here are some more Creedal statements found in the New Testament The following scripture passages are considered by many to be creeds or declarations of faith. These are very early statements of what the church just after Jesus believed. See if you can spot the important message which was being declared.
John Nathanael answered him, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God!
You are the King of Israel! John Simon Peter answered him, 'Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God. Acts And as they went along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, 'See, here is water! What is to prevent my being baptized? Acts And they said, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.
Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
