I read this for a memoir writing class, and I honestly learned more about how to write memoir from the memoir books than i did this book. Which is not a bad thing, certainly, but still slightly disappointing. I'm sure there's better texts on this subject out there.

I just finished reading a chapter each week over three months. Again, I tend to have a mild intolerance for craft-y books on writing, but I actually enjoyed this one and found, as a bonus, a wealth of suggestions from Root's extensive list of examples of the form. Not a bad intro to nonfictionist writing. The book wears on a bit as the author goes over what creative non-fiction is over and over.

However, as the book moves on the reader is introduced to aspects and elements to pay attention to when dealing with creative non-fiction work. Yes, we get that the name of the genre is insufficient.

Each chapter looks at a particular aspect of writing and reading nonfiction. He defines the genre, he challenges it, he offers new ways of considering it, including experimental. I found his analyses of other writers a little repetitive, but thought his advice and exercises were very strong.
