For Flores, this manifests through enrollment in AP classes, summer courses and extracurriculars like sports or volunteering at a hospital in Houston.

The comparison between Carroll's book and Penick's may not be thoroughly applicable, but it's a good way to get a handle on what is happening here. Edward, an American student fascinated with Japanese culture, goes to Japan to study and soon gets involved in translating a recently-uncovered set of ancient documents called "The Secret Annals.
Even though the texts may be forgeries and the teacher may never have existed historically, the Secret Annals exert a strange fascination on Edward.
He gets drawn deeper and deeper into their world until the dream of the Japanese sovereign begins to invade his everyday life. He begins to wonder what is reality and what is dream. Penick writes with great assurance and artistry, drawing no doubt on extensive knowledge of history, literature, culture and religion. The wealth of detail brings the teacher as well as his followers into sharp focus. As in Journey of the North Star , court life and political intrigue are meticulously portrayed and analyzed. I must admit that I was confused at times about how the different narrative strands were connected, but it all came together in the end.
Steve King: Dreamers Can 'Live in the Shadows' After DACA Ends
View all 6 comments. Can we achieve utopian peace within? Can we create a utopian society in the world? Is this the best use of our humanity? These questions are explored through a tension set up between the rarified world of academic study and the direct, in-your-face, crude, frightening, sometimes beautiful, utterly strange world of life with a charismatic, enlightened, "crazy wisdom" Teacher. There is so much in this novel to ponder and discuss! It would be a great Book Club choice.
And if you like your wisdom crazy or otherwise delivered in a finely wrought package It is beautifully written.

Douglas Penick had the inestimable good fortune to spend years and years in the world of the twentieth-century's greatest spiritual teacher. And we have the inestimable good fortune to receive, in this novel, an account of those times, retold as a mystery within an enigma. Though others have given their accounts of that life, no one has evoked it so precisely, wondrously, confoundingly and perfectly as Mr Penick.
A modern classic.
