Staff View: Pedophilia and sexual offending against children :
He dispels common myths about pedophilia, clarifying for instance that not all sexual offenders against children have pedophilia, and not all people with pedophilia commit sexual offenses. Seto also distinguishes pedophilia from hebephilia as attractions to prepubescent and pubescent children, respectively. Seto offers practical recommendations for conducting clinical evaluations, risk assessments, and interventions with pedophilic individuals and with sexual offenders in clinical and forensic settings.
He also provides evidence-based suggestions for future studies and policy reforms. New to this edition is an increased emphasis on prevention efforts with at-risk individuals who have pedophilia or hebephilia. Phone toll-free Tel Fax E-mail info cavershambooksellers. Join our mailing list.

He reveals that pedophiles show a persistent sexual interest in prepubescent children whether or not they act out this interest. Seto examines the theory, assessment, and intervention of pedophilia and analyzes the research.
Pedophilia, writes Seto, has been evaluated with self-report, interviews, questionnaires, behavior, laboratory tests, polygraphy, and neuroimaging, although the reliability and validity of these methods raise concerns. Inter-rater reliability of the diagnosis of pedophilia is also problematic because of the subjective nature of diagnostic data; in addition, use of self-identified clinical or criminal samples has hampered research. Treatment research includes meta-analysis of outcomes, cognitive and behavioral psychological interventions, medical treatments e.
Seto points out that research does not provide strong support for the efficacy of current psychosocial treatments. He suggests that treatments need to be matched to risk level, and outcome measures need to target reoffending. Some nonbehavioral treatments, including various psychotherapies, seem to have higher rates of recidivism and suggest that behavioral treatment may be contraindicated.

Contrary to popular belief, not all sex offenders who target children are pedophiles, and not all pedophiles commit sexual offenses. But what is unequivocal is that pedophilia, which is defined as a persistent sexual interest in prepubescent children, is an emotionally charged and controversial topic. Parents are understandably worried about the safety and well-being of their children and want to protect them from being sexually exploited.
Mental health and criminal justice professionals want to learn more about the assessment methods and intervention techniques that are available to develop and implement effective policies and practices.
