And later, when she was alone, the darkness seem to be smothering and the noises began to happen Fortunately, the first ones were caused by Kelvin, who had been a resident of the house for years But Tess wasn't thrilled when she found that he, the cat, had come in through the basement, which supposedly didn't have an outside entrance Nor was she happy when the noise continued even after Kelvin had started staying on her bed at night This is a fun cozy mystery. There is enough of a mystery regarding the house that keeps suspense high--is it haunted, will it be destroyed, along with all three islands, if Tess doesn't remain to live there, according to a legend?
Then, too, there seems to be an attraction between Tess and Benjamin, at least when they are alone, that Tess decides she'd like to explore Even with my earlier comments, I thoroughly enjoyed the story especially when Kelvin easily accepted Tess as her friend Still, it was fun to discover at least what caused the noise, even if the curse may continue into the future I'll probably stick around to find out why her first chapters affect me so much One person found this helpful.
We've got a great premise: Tess MacKay inherits an old house located on an island off the coast of Maine. The writing and plot are really great. My first impression of Tess is that she's prim and annoying, but after the first few pages, I start to like her or perhaps understand where she's coming from more. Some of the dialogue and Tess's actions seem very old fashioned, like the story should be set in the s and not present day, but the intrigue of an old house on an island that only has 3 houses pulled me in.
And Tess is smart and resourceful. We meet the main Maine? Then suddenly, just as I get involved in the story line, the book ends.

Author and publisher, do us a favor - relabel this as "short story", or perhaps combine this "book" using the term very loosely with other "books" in the series. This book was a pleasant surprise for me. I had read blurb about it on Amazon and it didn't seem like my kind of book. Then the other day I saw a review and decided to give it a try. Glad I did. Melanie Jackson has a way of keeping you so involved that I found myself wanting to do a Wendover family search. Tess, finding that the unwillingness of her parents, if they knew, but mostly her grandmother never talking about the past and then burdening her with a failing paper is the only part that bothered me but then I was taught that a good writer can interject a maddening situation and make you still want you to continue reading.
I am so glad I read that review and didn't just go by the blurb because I would have missed out. Another series added to my list. Cozyreaders Top Contributor: Cooking. Format: Paperback Verified Purchase. This novella or short story was worthy of the title of classic mystery in the style of a Poe. In my opinion, the only thing I would have liked is for the book to be triple the size. I chose the Paperback version.
